Civic body to introduce smart cards that provide patient's medical information at a swipe and cut down on the processes at hospitals

There is some good news for Bangloreans. Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagar Palike (BBMP) hospitals will shortly introduce a new health management system, which will simplify tedious procedures and cut down on wastage of time.

The BBMP will introduce a health smart card, which will divulge all information about the patient. The cards will have a patient identification code and can be swiped at any of the civic hospitals, which will all be networked.

"The smart cards will be constantly updated with information about the patient on every visit to a health centre. Doctors will also use the system and update their diagnosis of a patient," said a BBMP source. "Personal profile, emergency contact details, medical information, diagnosis, medication, immunisation and information about insurance providers are some of the details that will be made available on the cards."

The system will connect all civic healthcare facilities in a single network, including more than 40 BBMP primary health centres, hospitals and referral hospitals across the city, said the source.

"The new system aims to simplify aspects like patient identification, registration and maintenance of diagnosis," he added.

Paperless system

Apart from simplifying the system, the initiative also aims to make the health management system paperless.
Software giant Wipro has made its presentation in this regard.

"This is one of the several initiatives that aim at involving the IT sector," said K M Shivakumar, administrator, BBMP. "However, we also want to equip our staff with the ability to use the new system rather than using outside help. Besides this, we will have many more initiatives powered by IT."
